We were contacted with a special request from Mike & R -
"A few years ago we were cycling, and I crashed and broke my collarbone. It was plated with a piece of titanium. After the bones healed, I opted to get the plate taken out since it was bothering me a lot. I joked with him that we should get the plate melted down and make it into his wedding band so he'd always have a piece of me with him. "
That is how we got to make Mike's wedding band from the orthopedic titanium plate.
Firstly a design is finalized. We suggested a few options given the constraints and shape of the medical titanium plate. Settling on the titanium ring design is a matter of personal choice.
Option 1 - Ring shaped from orthopedic plate keeping the original style. This is a template mockup.
Option 2 - Traditional signet ring with part of the orthopedic titanium plate inlayed into the gold ring.
Option 3 - A sleek modern design with inlay section of the titanium plate set with diamonds.
Option 4 - A smooth 2mm titanium half round wedding band.

Keep in mind that titanium comes in different grades, which can affect the working of it. That can only be determined when working it, although medical titanium should not be an issue. A titanium joint is not soldered but riveted instead.
A section of the orthopedic plate is tested to see how it reacts to heat and how malleable the metal is.
The titanium plate is then straightened and forged into a ring.
Then the titanium is annealed and the ends joined together.
The polished wedding band with most of the character of the orthopedic titanium plate implant preserved.
